Smelting
Bars are smelted at a forge. Level Mining by gathering veins; smelting also gives points while the recipe is not grey.

Mining finds ore and stone nodes in the world, then lets you smelt eligible ore into bars. Blacksmithing and Engineering use many of those materials, so either is a practical crafting partner. You can also take Mining with Herbalism if your goal is to gather and sell materials rather than craft them yourself.
Mining at a campsite
The beta reference lists a Lodestone at skill 20, described as a melee attack-power camp benefit. Higher tiers add a Rock Garden that can produce a common mining node over time and a Molten Foundry for recipes that require that station. These campsite additions give Mining a group utility as well as a source of crafting materials.
Planning your route
Gather ore when a node is already near your route, and remember to smelt it where a forge is available. Keep bars for a planned Blacksmithing or Engineering recipe; otherwise compare their market value against the cost of materials for your own crafts. Not every ore node or campsite recipe has a complete Forever location guide yet.
