Published Updated

WoW Forever is not free-to-play, but you do not buy it either. It is included with the regular World of Warcraft subscription or Game Time, the same one that covers modern WoW. The optional packs sell the new Skyborne race, early name reservation and cosmetics.

Short answer

  • Is WoW Forever free? No. You need an active WoW subscription or Game Time (in the US the standard subscription is $14.99 a month).
  • Do I have to buy WoW Forever? No. There is no box price. The subscription gives access from November 4, 2026.
  • Is there any free way to play? Two short ones: the October 21 stress test and an Invite-A-Friend code for November 4 to 11.

What the subscription includes

The same subscription covers modern WoW, Classic and Forever. With it you get the full Forever game: leveling 1 to 60, the zones, quests, dungeons and raids as they are released. The only content it does not include is the Skyborne race and its Zephras Isle starting zone.

The three packs compared

Skyborne Heroic Pack Skyborne Epic Pack Warcraft Forever Collection
Price (US / EU) $29.99 / €29.99 $59.99 / €59.99 $79.99 / €79.99
Skyborne race + Zephras Isle Yes Yes Yes

Beta access (ends Oct 23) No Yes Yes

Warcraft III: Reforged + Forsaken Kingdom No No Yes

The packs do not replace the subscription: you still need it to keep playing after launch. The Warcraft Forever Collection is a limited-time bundle that Blizzard lists as available through January 11, 2027. There is also a physical Collector’s Edition with a statue and art items.

Which one is worth it now

The beta closes for good on October 23, so beta access is no longer a reason to buy the Epic Pack. Today the choice is simpler:

  • You only want to play Forever: subscription only. Nothing else is needed.
  • You want a Skyborne character or a specific name: Skyborne Heroic Pack ($29.99). It is the cheapest way to get the race and name reservation.
  • You were going to pay for a month anyway: the Epic Pack includes 30 days of Game Time, extra cosmetics and 3 friend codes, which offsets part of the $30 difference.
  • You want Warcraft III: Reforged and the new campaign: the Collection. It adds nothing to Forever itself beyond the Epic Pack.

Is the Skyborne race a paywall?

Many players see it that way: the headline new race requires a $29.99 pack on top of the subscription, and Blizzard has not announced a date when it will become part of the standard subscription. If you do not care about Skyborne, the other races cover every class; compare them on our race page.
