Published Updated

The free WoW Forever stress test took place on Wednesday, October 21. These were the announced regional start times. The test has ended and these instructions remain as an archive.

What a stress test is

A stress test (Blizzard also called it a “Server Slam”) is a short window where Blizzard lets everyone in at once to load the servers the game will use at launch. The goal is to find crashes, queues and lag before November 4, not to give you a long demo. Expect queues and some instability: that is the point of the test.

What changed

The free test was announced for October 19. Blizzard updated its official post: it now takes place on Wednesday, October 21. It is not cancelled and it is still free.

  • Who can join: any player with a WoW account. No active subscription is needed.
  • Where: on each region’s production hardware, the same servers used at launch.
  • How long: a few hours. Blizzard did not give an end time.
  • What gets wiped: when it ends, Blizzard deletes every character, name and bit of progress. It is a complete wipe; the beta reopens afterwards.

October 21 start times

Region Start
Americas + Oceania 2:00 p.m. PDT (5:00 p.m. EDT)
Europe 19:00 CEST (18:00 UK)
Taiwan 5:00 a.m. on October 22
Korea 6:00 a.m. on October 22
Australia (Sydney) 8:00 a.m. on October 22

How to install it now

The Stress Test client is already in Battle.net, so you can install it before Wednesday and skip the download rush:

  1. Update your graphics card drivers (Blizzard lists this as the first step).
  2. Open the Battle.net app, let it update and select World of Warcraft.
  3. In the Game Version dropdown above the Play button, choose World of Warcraft: Forever Stress Test under In Development, then click Install.
  4. When the test opens, press Play, pick an available test realm and create a new character.

What to do during the test

Blizzard asks players to make a character, do a few quests, trade items, chat and group up to stress the servers. For you, it is a good chance to:

  1. Try a class for free before paying. If unsure, start with the best class to start with.
  2. Check that your PC runs the game. See the minimum and recommended requirements.
  3. Test your first talents with the calculator.

Do not get attached to the name: it is wiped. The real name reservation starts October 27, and the game launches on November 4.

After the test

October 21 is also the last full day of the beta. After that there is no way to play until launch, except an Invite-A-Friend code from a friend who bought a pack, valid November 4 to 11.
