There is no single best class for everyone: it depends on whether you will level solo, with friends or through dungeons. This guide gives a quick answer and links to each full class guide.

Quick answer

If you want to… Pick Why
Level solo as comfortably as possible Hunter or Warlock A pet that takes hits plus ranged damage: fast pace, few deaths.
Level fast and control fights Mage High damage and control, but every pull and mana break needs a plan.
Always find a dungeon group Priest, Paladin or Druid Healers and tanks are always in demand.
Do everything on one character Druid or Shaman Damage, healing or tanking depending on spec.
Use stealth and choose your fights Rogue Skip fights and reach objectives without clearing the whole path.
Tank for your group Warrior or Paladin The top tanks in our dungeon tier list.

If this is your first character and you have no fixed group, our pick is Hunter: it is the most forgiving class while you learn the world.

Why the choice matters more in Forever

Blizzard said in its deep-dive panel that combat is slower: an ordinary enemy takes roughly 10–15 seconds to defeat when you play solo. That rewards classes that recover well between fights rather than those that rely on killing fast.

In dungeons, crowd control matters again: Blizzard names Polymorph, Banish, Fear and roots as answers when there are too many enemies for the tank. Mage, Warlock, Hunter and Rogue bring that control.

All 9 classes in one line

  • Hunter: the most comfortable solo leveler. Watch ammunition and pet control.
  • Warlock: almost as safe as Hunter, with damage over time and a demon. Balance health and mana.
  • Mage: fast with lots of control, but large pulls punish mistakes.
  • Druid: the most flexible. Heals itself, changes forms and fills any role.
  • Priest: levels as Shadow and is the most wanted healer in groups.
  • Rogue: stealth and control. Plan weapons and recovery.
  • Shaman: totems, weapons and healing. Versatile, but mana management matters.
  • Paladin: very safe but slow solo; shines as a healer or tank.
  • Warrior: the hardest solo leveler, but an excellent tank and group damage dealer with good gear.

Race and new combinations

Blizzard announced six new race and class combinations: Gnome Priest, Human Hunter, Dwarf Shaman, Orc Mage, Troll Warlock and Undead Paladin, with more planned. Compare their racials on our best race by class page.

Before you decide

  1. Agree on a faction and ruleset with friends. Different rulesets cannot run dungeons together.
  2. Open your class guide and try its level-30 route in the talent calculator.
  3. Check the launch time in your country and name reservation.
